Bridging Traditional Knowledge & Modern Science

I am an Ethiopian horticulturist and plant biotechnologist with over a decade of experience dedicated to one mission: conserving Ethiopia's native flora and ensuring its sustainable use for food security and ecological resilience. My work sits at the intersection of rigorous academic research, hands-on conservation management, and a bold vision for systemic change in African applied science education.

I hold an MSc in Plant Biotechnology from Jimma University and serve as a lecturer in the Department of Horticulture at Dilla University. For five years, I served as the Director of the Dilla University Botanical and Ecotourism Garden (DUBEG), where I played a pivotal role in its establishment and development into a center for education, conservation, and ecotourism.

🔬 Research Excellence

My research focuses on two cornerstone species of Ethiopian heritage and food security:

Enset (Ensete ventricosum): Known as the "Tree Against Hunger," I have led studies on its landrace diversity, ethnobotanical uses, medicinal properties, and pest management (including the enset root mealybug).
Coffee (Coffea arabica): I am committed to preserving Ethiopia's coffee heritage through research on genetic diversity, forest coffee conservation, and sustainable farming practices.

My work has been published in international journals including Advances in Agriculture, Food Science & Nutrition, and the International Journal of Tropical Insect Science. I am an active member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) and the Africa Tree Seed Groups (ATSG), and I serve as a Research Botanist for the Lukango Tree Conservancy Limited (Uganda).

wehenet.com was born from a recognition that Ethiopia's applied universities hold immense potential that remains untapped due to fragmented knowledge and a gap between policy and practice. My 2025–2035 strategic vision is to change that by building the digital and institutional infrastructure for a new model of African applied science.

This platform is my commitment to:

Integrating AI and digital tools into biodiversity conservation and agriculture.
Developing comprehensive, open-access biological databases for the Flora of Ethiopia (7,000+ species), Enset Landraces (300+ documented), and Coffee Genetic Resources.
Creating an "Applied Science Knowledge Hub" to share curricula, research, and best practices across all 15 Ethiopian applied universities.
Establishing the EAUI – Applied University Index to measure and drive impact.

📌 Current Projects: Leading initiatives on biogas production from organic waste, phytochemical screening of indigenous plants, and the comprehensive floristic documentation of Ethiopia's vascular plants — all while training the next generation of African scientists.
